A new analysis has shown that receiving at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine decreases the chances of having symptoms beyond three weeks or developing long COVID.
Compared to people who got no vaccine, a single dose of Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, or the Janssen vaccine showed 29% effectiveness in preventing long COVID. This protection was most potent (35% effective) in people vaccinated before being infected with the coronavirus. However, Post-infection vaccination was 27% effective.
Since the analysis showed a significant reduction in post-COVID-19 conditions with the vaccine even after having COVID-19, the authors advised vaccinating all the unvaccinated individuals who have had COVID-19.
The study authors, however, cautioned about the limitations of the findings and their inability to assess the effectiveness of vaccines for long COVID among people with weakened immune systems due to a lack of data.
